The Ozbizweb Group’s Story
Jim Munro founded Ozbiz Holdings Pty Ltd to develop and sell Ozbiz PC Lawyer – a legal document creation program for Australian Small Businesses. For posterities sake, the original site is still online at www.ozbiz.net.au. Jim built this site himself and is quite proud of it. In the interests of professionalism, he left out his signature ‘Queen – We Are The Champions’ Midi file and library of animated gifs.
1996 marked the beginning of Jim Munro’s IT influence on his family. Jim was working for weeks at a time in Melbourne, and his wife, Angela, lived on the Gold Coast with their three sons, James, Blair and Elliot. Jim returned from Victoria with a computer, a copy of Windows 95 and a demo CD loaded with games. James (10), Blair (9) and Elliot (7) were given the computer in pieces, and told that if they could put it together, they could play the games. It was in these early days, with computer games as an incentive, that the boys learnt the foundations of PC hardware, software and networking.
1996 also saw the beginning of Shopsafe Pty Ltd and the domain registration of shopsafe.com and shopsafe.com.au. Shopsafe wasn’t always an online shopping directory, at its inception it was just an online directory for Tweed Heads and Gold Coast businesses.
Ozbizweb Pty Ltd was founded as an Internet Service Provider, web design and IT company servicing the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads areas. Most customers were home users and small businesses who had their Internet, website and PC hardware supplied by this business. Ozbizweb later phased out its dialup ISP service when faster internet became widely available, and began reselling ADSL through Telstra as a ‘virtual ISP’.
In 2001, James, Blair and Elliot launched GamezHQ – a dedicated gaming server that online users could connect into and play multiplayer games. This was a short lived venture, though it gave them experience in Linux, Internet networking and Firewall configuration. It was during this time that they met Bernard Mangelsdorf, a GamezHQ user and future founder of Border IT Solutions.
Jim, James, Blair, Elliot and Bernard studied for the Microsoft Certified Professional Exam: ‘Installing, Configuring and Administering Windows Server 2000’. Only Jim and Blair passed, with James, Elliot and Bernard missing out. At 15, Blair Munro became one of the youngest MCPs in the world. These certifications helped Ozbizweb complete the requirements to become a Microsoft Certified Partner, at the time one of the only IT companies on the Gold Coast to achieve this. Ozbizweb has completed the certification requirements every year since.
Also in 2002, Shopsafe.com.au was built. An Australian Online Shopping directory featuring only secure e-commerce stores with safe checkouts.
In November 2003 at 17 years old, James Munro started Integritek Pty Ltd, an on-site IT support company for local businesses and home users. In retrospect, this could be seen as the inception of the ‘Ozbizweb Group’, with both IT companies working together to service different IT needs of the same customers. Integritek provided on-site IT installation and support, while Ozbizweb Pty Ltd provided web design, hardware and software licenses.
At 15, Elliot started his first business and database driven site, ‘Find Buy Save’ – an online shopping directory similar to Shopsafe.
Blair started his degree in Information Technology at Griffith University. This year, James passed his first Microsoft Certified Professional exams for ‘Installing, Configuring and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server’ and ‘Installing, Configuring and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server’.
Blair completed his degree and started work for Queensland Government’s IT Infrastructure department, CorpTech. Blair remained in this role for one year, before starting his own on-site IT support business.
While completing a Bachelor of Multimedia, Elliot worked for a year in an IT department for Griffith University. After Graduating, Elliot worked with his brothers providing on-site IT Support and also for Griffith University producing Digital Videos for Internet Marketing. He also passed his first MCP exams, completing three to become an MCITP – Enterprise Support Technician.
Blair registered Gold Coast IT Support and Bernard founded Border IT Solutions. Border IT Solutions is an IT Support company that supports businesses and home users, specialising in VoIP, Hardware and cloud technology.
Elliot started Shopsafe Media – an Internet Marketing business designed to meet the web design, marketing and cloud integration needs of the Ozbizweb Group’s customers.
In 2013, for the first time in over 10 years, the Ozbizweb Group decided to pursue a Microsoft Partner Gold Competency. The step up from silver partner to gold partner required a huge investment in training and certifications, as well as diverse and specialised customer evidence in the form of references, surveys and customer satisfaction scores.
In July 2013, we became one of only 19 Microsoft Partners in the world with a Gold Small Business Competency. Because our clients have grown over the years, we decided to also invest in the training and certifications to achieve the Gold Midmarket Solution Provider competency. As of this writing, we are the only IT company on the Gold Coast to have achieved either of these competencies.
This year, we also became Cloud Accelerate Partners for Office 365. This achievement demonstrates our expertise in the design, deployment and customisation of web-based products and services. Providing advanced cloud-computing solutions to help customers reduce IT overhead.
We know cloud services aren’t just offered by Microsoft and that some of our customers use Google Apps. To meet their needs, James, Blair, Elliot and Bernard have built up their Google Apps Administration skills, and Elliot has completed the certification process to become a Google Apps Certified Deployment Specialist.
The vast majority of our customer-base has been built on word-of-mouth. Over the years we’ve focus on personalised services, reliable support and transparent pricing. We feel very lucky to have worked in this rapidly changing industry for this long, and look forward to many more years
